The left can’t even celebrate America without making it about their feelings.
While millions of Americans gathered to mark the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, mainstream media pundits were busy writing op-eds about how the colors red, white, and blue make them sad now. The New York Times published a piece literally titled “Trump Ruined the Fourth of July for Me.” The Atlantic declared that Trump had “destroyed” the celebrations with his “partisan stance.”
What exactly was the grave offense? Flying flags on federal buildings. Holding a patriotic event on the National Mall. Giving a speech as President of the United States. The horror.
These are the same people who spent years lecturing us about “democratic norms” and “peaceful transfer of power.” Now they can’t handle seeing the sitting president participate in Independence Day festivities because his face appears on banners alongside the American flag. When did patriotism become contingent on which party holds the White House?
The irony is thick enough to cut with a knife. They claim Trump doesn’t believe in American “abstractions” — yet they’re the ones who can’t see past their own partisan rage to celebrate the country that guarantees their right to publish those very complaints. The same First Amendment that protects their op-eds also protects the flags they find so triggering.
Meanwhile, actual Americans were enjoying fireworks, gathering with family, and remembering why this experiment in self-government has lasted two and a half centuries. The media’s temper tantrum says more about their own detachment from everyday Americans than it does about any supposed damage to our national celebrations.
If seeing patriotic displays makes your heart ache, the problem isn’t the flags. It’s you.
