With President Trump’s 48-hour ultimatum to reopen the Strait of Hormuz now at the halfway point, Iran’s leadership isn’t backing down — they’re threatening to plunge the entire Gulf region into darkness and thirst.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf took to X over the weekend with a chilling warning: if the United States follows through on Trump’s threat to obliterate Iran’s power plants, the mullahs will retaliate by striking the energy and water infrastructure of their Gulf neighbors. We’re talking about critical desalination plants that produce nearly all the drinking water for cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. These gleaming desert metropolises consume five times as much power per capita as Iran does. Without electricity, they don’t just lose air conditioning — they lose the ability to turn seawater into something drinkable.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards doubled down on the brinkmanship, declaring that the Strait of Hormuz will remain “completely closed” until any destroyed Iranian power plants are rebuilt. This isn’t just a threat against America or Israel anymore. This is a threat against global commerce, against innocent civilians across the Gulf, and against the stability of energy markets worldwide.
Let’s be clear about what’s happening here. For 47 years, the Islamic Republic has waged a continuous war against the United States and our allies. From the 1979 embassy hostage crisis to the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing to the Iranian IEDs that killed 603 American troops in Iraq, this regime has operated under the assumption that Washington lacked the stomach to respond. Previous administrations proved them right, choosing to kick the can down the road while calling it diplomacy.
That changed when President Trump ordered the strike against Qassim Soleimani in 2020, and it’s changing again now. The Iranian people themselves celebrated Soleimani’s death — they know better than anyone the tyranny of the mullahs. When the regime massacred more than 40,000 protesters in January and tried to hide it by shutting down the internet, those same people looked to Trump for help.
The current conflict, now three weeks old, has already claimed more than 2,000 lives and sent shockwaves through global markets. Air raid sirens sounded across Israel again this weekend as Iranian missiles targeted southern towns. The Israeli military responded with strikes on Tehran. And now we have this standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas normally transits.
President Trump talked about “winding down” the war just days ago, but Iran’s continued aggression forced his hand. The deployment of U.S. Marines and heavy landing craft to the region signals that this administration isn’t bluffing. The question is whether the mullahs — who have built their entire foreign policy on the belief that America is too weak or divided to respond decisively — will finally learn what deterrence actually means.
Iran started this war nearly half a century ago. They’ve killed more Americans than any other terrorist regime on Earth. They even plotted twice to assassinate Trump himself. At some point, the bill comes due. That point may be arriving within the next 24 hours.
