The presidential helicopter carrying Donald Trump came dangerously close to a commercial passenger jet Tuesday, triggering a federal safety investigation into yet another airspace failure near Washington’s Reagan National Airport. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Marine One experienced what aviation officials call a “loss of standard separation” when air traffic controllers failed to halt flights at the nearby airport as required by federal protocols.
At their closest proximity, the presidential helicopter and the commercial aircraft came within 0.8 miles horizontally and 700 feet vertically — well inside the mandated safety buffer of 1.5 miles and 500 feet. The incident occurred when Marine One departed the White House around the same time a passenger jet was taking off from Reagan National, creating a situation that should have been prevented by ground control procedures.
The FAA acknowledged the breach in a terse statement, noting there was “momentary loss of separation after which the aircraft continued to move away from one another.” An agency spokesperson added that the air traffic controller remained in contact with both pilots throughout the incident, and officials are continuing their review with plans to implement “any appropriate corrective actions.”
White House spokesperson Kush Desai moved quickly to reassure the public, stating that “Marine One flights are piloted by some of the best aviators in the world, and at no point was the President in harm’s way.” While that may be true, the incident raises uncomfortable questions about whether our nation’s air traffic control systems have actually improved since the devastating crash earlier this year.
Remember January 29th? That’s when an American Airlines passenger plane collided with a military Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River, killing 67 people in one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent memory. The National Transportation Safety Board later found “systemic failures in airspace design, safety oversight, and risk management” by both the FAA and the U.S. Army. The board issued 33 safety recommendations in the aftermath.
So why are we still seeing near-misses in the same airspace just months later? The FAA created new rules specifically to prevent exactly this kind of incident. Either those rules aren’t being followed, or they weren’t adequate to begin with. When the President of the United States is aboard one of the aircraft involved, you’d expect every protocol to be executed flawlessly.
The NTSB is now investigating this latest incident. Perhaps they’ll find answers that explain how a presidential helicopter and a commercial jet ended up sharing the same patch of sky when procedures should have kept them apart. Americans deserve air traffic control systems that work — especially in the congested corridors around our nation’s capital.
