President Donald Trump responded to yet another potential threat against his life with the kind of unflinching resolve that has defined his political career. When asked by Fox News about the armed man arrested outside his California golf club over the weekend, Trump didn’t dwell on the danger. He cut straight to the bigger picture.
“Well the only thing I get a little solace from is they say only consequential presidents [are targeted for assassination] and I am definitely consequential,” Trump said. It was a characteristically Trumpian response—defiant, self-aware, and unwilling to play the victim even when the circumstances would justify it.
The incident in question involved Jeanine John Taele, a 38-year-old man arrested Sunday at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Taele was walking the grounds taking photographs and videos, apparently monitoring security operations. When deputies detained him, they found a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow point ammunition in his pocket. A search of his vehicle revealed a loaded pistol with a round already chambered, plus another loaded magazine. When investigators executed a search warrant at his residence, they uncovered an illegally modified AR-style rifle, body armor, high-capacity magazines, and notebooks containing what the department described as “concerning statements.”
This marks at least the third serious security incident involving Trump this year alone. The Secret Service fatally shot an armed individual carrying a shotgun and gas canister near Mar-a-Lago earlier in 2026, and another man breached security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Before that, Trump survived an assassination attempt at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally in July 2024, where a gunman grazed his ear with a bullet. Weeks later, another armed suspect was discovered hiding with a rifle near Trump International Golf Club in Florida.
What does it say about our country that a former—and now current—president faces this level of sustained threat? And what does it say about Trump himself that he meets these moments not with fear, but with a recognition that his presidency has been genuinely disruptive to the established order?
Trump pointed to his handling of the economy and Iran as evidence of his consequential nature. The Justice Department has previously charged an alleged asset of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in connection with a murder-for-hire plot targeting Trump, suggesting that foreign adversaries view him as enough of a threat to warrant assassination attempts.
The Secret Service continues to investigate whether Taele specifically intended to harm the president. For now, the department says it has “identified no credible threat to our communities.” But the pattern is undeniable. Whether it’s unhinged individuals or foreign actors, Trump has become the most targeted president in modern American history. And through it all, he keeps showing up, keeps working, keeps fighting.
Consequential? Without question. The only question remaining is whether America fully appreciates what it takes to lead when half the world seems to want you dead.
