A California man is in custody after being arrested at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes with a cache of weapons and body armor, just days before President Trump’s scheduled visit to the area. Jeanine John Taele, 38, of Downey, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to multiple criminal charges after plainclothes federal agents spotted him walking the grounds taking photographs and videos while appearing to monitor security-planning activities.
The arrest raises serious questions about presidential security and the persistent threats facing the 45th and 47th president. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded around 3:30 p.m. Sunday after federal agents flagged Taele’s suspicious behavior. During a pat-down, deputies allegedly recovered a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition from his pocket. A subsequent search of his vehicle revealed a loaded pistol with a round in the chamber and another loaded magazine containing hollow-point ammunition.
Taele now faces charges including receiving a large-capacity magazine, carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, and possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun. A judge set his bail at $250,000, ordered him to surrender any weapons, barred him from Trump National Golf Club, and prohibited him from leaving California while the case proceeds. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 26.
President Trump arrived in Los Angeles late Tuesday for a Republican National Committee fundraiser, apparently undeterred by the security threat. The incident comes as threats against the president continue to raise concerns in the wake of the July 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman opened fire at a rally, wounding Trump and killing a supporter.
