Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez crossed a dangerous line Tuesday, taking to social media to urge American service members to disobey the commander-in-chief’s orders. In a post that can only be described as reckless, the New York Democrat told troops they have a “duty to refuse illegal orders” just hours before President Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Ocasio-Cortez’s comments came in response to Trump’s warning that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Tehran failed to meet American demands. Rather than supporting the president’s efforts to prevent further escalation, she chose to undermine military discipline at a moment of maximum tension. Her statement was not merely criticism of policy, it was a direct appeal to mutiny within the ranks.
The congresswoman did not stop there. She joined a chorus of far-left Democrats calling for Trump’s impeachment and even suggested cabinet members invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. These are the same voices who spent years claiming to defend democratic norms, yet they seem perfectly willing to destabilize the constitutional order when it suits their political agenda.
What makes this particularly galling is the timing. While American forces stand ready to protect vital shipping lanes and prevent Iranian aggression, a sitting member of Congress is actively encouraging insubordination. There is a world of difference between debating policy through proper legislative channels and attempting to sabotage military operations from the comfort of a congressional office.
House Democratic leadership, to their limited credit, stopped short of endorsing Ocasio-Cortez’s call for impeachment. Instead, they urged Speaker Mike Johnson to reconvene the House to vote on a war powers resolution. At least that approach respects the constitutional separation of powers rather than inciting chaos within the armed forces.
The irony here is thick enough to cut with a knife. The same progressive faction that routinely accuses conservatives of undermining institutions has no qualms about encouraging military personnel to ignore lawful orders from their elected commander-in-chief. They speak of democracy while working to paralyze the very mechanisms that keep Americans safe.
For the men and women in uniform, this kind of political gamesmanship from the home front must be exhausting. They volunteered to serve their country, not to become pawns in the latest social media spectacle from a congresswoman desperate for headlines. Their oath is to the Constitution, not to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s interpretation of it.
The president has a constitutional duty to protect American interests and ensure freedom of navigation on the high seas. Encouraging military personnel to second-guess those decisions based on partisan politics is not leadership, it is sabotage.
