Nancy Pelosi took the podium at a Capitol plaque unveiling ceremony Wednesday and delivered what can only be described as a performance, slurring her words and launching into a bizarre, long-winded attack on President Trump over the events of January 6, 2021, as captured in video footage from C-SPAN. The occasion was supposed to honor Capitol police officers who served that day, but Pelosi couldn’t resist turning it into yet another political spectacle, falsely claiming Trump “incited an insurrection” despite the fact that he was never actually charged with insurrection, according to Justice Department records. “When people visit the Capitol, they will always see a tribute to the bravery, to the courage, to the patriotism, to the debt that we owe our law enforcement officers on that terrible day,” Pelosi said in her remarks, her words noticeably slurred as seen in the broadcast.
And then came the pivot: “They fought that for the Congress of the United States at a time when a instant, an insurrection was incited by the president of the United States. Who could figure that that would ever happen?” she added, according to the same C-SPAN coverage. It’s the same tired narrative Democrats have been pushing for over four years now, as polls from Rasmussen Reports show most Americans have moved on to concerns like inflation, border security, and whether World War III is about to break out in the Middle East. Pelosi went on to recount dramatic tales of her staff hiding “behind closed doors in the dark under tables with furniture pushed up” while officers like Michael Fanone were allegedly attacked, drawing from her own statements during congressional hearings.
But the details grew increasingly muddled as she spoke of Fanone suffering “a heart attack while it happens or a stroke, whatever,” based on her ceremony remarks. It’s the kind of rambling, disjointed commentary that raises questions about whether the former Speaker should still be holding office, let alone delivering remarks at official ceremonies. What’s remarkable here isn’t that Pelosi is still obsessing over January 6, it’s that the Democratic Party as a whole seems incapable of discussing anything else, while Trump is negotiating peace deals, as noted in statements from his campaign.
The American people have made their feelings clear on this subject, with election results showing they rejected the endless January 6 hearings and impeachment theater, according to analyses by The Wall Street Journal. They elected Trump to a second term precisely because they were tired of Democrats living in the past while the country faced real problems in the present. Pelosi’s performance Wednesday shows that some people simply never learn; she’s still fighting the last war, still delivering the same talking points, still hoping that if she just says “insurrection” enough times, voters will forget that her party’s policies have been a disaster for working families.
