John Brennan, the former CIA Director who spent years pushing the debunked Russia collusion narrative that cost taxpayers millions and divided the nation, has found a new way to embarrass himself on national television. During an appearance on MS NOW with Symone Sanders-Townsend, Brennan declared that when it comes to the current conflict with Iran, he actually believes the Iranian regime more than he believes the President of the United States. This is the same man who once voted for the Communist Party candidate for president, so perhaps his judgment about who to trust shouldn’t surprise anyone. But for a former intelligence chief to publicly side with a terrorist-sponsoring regime over his own country’s elected leader is a new low, even for the swamp’s most reliable partisan.
Brennan’s comments came as President Trump announced productive conversations with Iranian officials that led him to postpone military strikes against Iranian power plants for five days. The Iranian regime, predictably, denied these conversations took place. That’s when Brennan stepped in to explain that he finds the mullahs in Tehran more trustworthy than the man Americans elected to lead them. Let that sink in. A man who once ran the Central Intelligence Agency would rather take the word of a regime that chants “death to America” every Friday than believe his own president is negotiating for peace.
What’s Brennan’s evidence for this stunning claim? Nothing, really, except his own seething contempt for Donald Trump. He suggested Trump is “flailing” and trying to “get out of this debacle that he has created” by making up claims about negotiations. The only concession Brennan made was that Trump’s team might be talking to some people, just not anyone who actually matters in the Iranian government. It’s the kind of armchair quarterbacking that would be laughable if it weren’t coming from someone who had access to America’s most sensitive secrets and used his position to push political hit jobs.
This is the same John Brennan who, along with James Clapper and other intelligence community figures, signed a letter claiming the Hunter Biden laptop had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation” right before the 2020 election. That letter was used by media outlets and Big Tech to censor the story and protect Joe Biden. Turns out the laptop was completely real, and the only disinformation was coming from the intelligence officials who signed that letter. Now Brennan wants Americans to trust his judgment about who is telling the truth?
The reality is that Brennan and his fellow travelers in the intelligence community have spent nearly a decade trying to undermine Trump at every turn. From the Steele dossier to the Mueller investigation to impeachment, they’ve used every tool at their disposal to delegitimize a president they never accepted. Now, with American troops in harm’s way and the possibility of a negotiated settlement on the table, Brennan’s instinct is to side with the enemy and call the president a liar. There was a time when Americans expected their intelligence officials to be nonpartisan professionals who served the country regardless of who was in the White House. Those days are clearly over.
