Temple Israel is one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the Detroit metro area, serving the West Bloomfield community for decades. West Bloomfield Township sits in Oakland County, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Detroit, and is home to a significant Jewish population.
This attack comes at a time when antisemitic incidents across the country have been surging. The Anti-Defamation League has documented record numbers of antisemitic attacks in recent years, and Jewish communities nationwide have been forced to increase security at houses of worship. And now this — a brazen, daylight attack on a synagogue in suburban Michigan.
We don’t know everything yet. We don’t know who did this or why. But what we do know is that a house of worship was targeted — deliberately, with a vehicle, followed by gunfire. That’s not an accident. That’s an attack on a community at prayer, and it demands answers.
For people of faith, this hits close to home regardless of denomination. An attack on any house of God is an attack on all of us. “If one member suffers, all suffer together” — 1 Corinthians 12:26. Christians, Jews, anyone who walks through the doors of a sanctuary expecting safety and finding violence instead understands that something is deeply broken.
We’ll update this story as more information becomes available from Oakland County officials and local law enforcement.
Developing story — pray for the congregation at Temple Israel and the first responders on the scene. We’ll bring you updates as they come.
