For decades, Americans have been asking for this simple fix, and for decades, politicians in Washington have found excuses not to deliver it.
“People are sick and tired of having to change their clocks twice a year,” Trump wrote. “It is foolish, inconvenient and, in some cases, very costly.” He’s not wrong. The economic costs alone are staggering—millions of dollars spent adjusting systems, schedules, and infrastructure for no discernible benefit. But Trump’s argument goes deeper than just the annoyance factor. He points to studies showing that permanent daylight saving time would reduce robbery and murder rates, lower car accidents (especially those involving pedestrians), decrease risks for cardiac issues and stroke, combat seasonal depression, and make it safer for children walking home from school.
The President also highlighted the economic benefits for industries like sports, fitness, tourism, retail, and restaurants—all of which thrive when Americans have an extra hour of evening daylight to enjoy. And let’s not forget the simple quality-of-life improvements: more time with family, better conditions for extracurricular activities, and yes, even savings on energy bills. So why hasn’t the Senate acted? The opposition is concentrated among lawmakers from Midwest and agriculture-heavy states who worry about darker mornings. But here’s the thing—Florida has been operating just fine on permanent daylight saving time since 2018. The doomsayers were wrong then, and they’re wrong now.
Isn’t it telling that the same Senate that can move at lightning speed to fund foreign wars and bail out big banks suddenly can’t find the time to pass a bill that would genuinely improve daily life for every single American?
