Congressman Andy Ogles announced he will file Articles of Impeachment against federal Judge Allison Burroughs for blocking the Trump Administration from ending Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals. According to Ogles’ statements, Judge Burroughs issued an administrative stay on Friday preventing the termination of TPS for Somalis. This comes despite the Supreme Court ruling in a 6-3 decision that the Trump Administration has the authority to end TPS, as referenced in the court’s opinion. The high court made it clear that Temporary Protected Status is temporary.
Ogles posted on X that enough is enough, writing Americans First NOT 3rd world migrants. His post directly called out the decision as favoring foreign nationals over citizens. The impeachment threat represents a significant escalation in the Republican response to judicial overreach. For years conservative lawmakers have complained about activist judges but rarely backed up those complaints with concrete action, based on repeated congressional remarks. Ogles is changing that calculus.
But Judge Burroughs can issue all the administrative stays she wants. She cannot rewrite the law or ignore the Supreme Court. Congressman Ogles is betting that enough of his colleagues agree to make her answer for it. This push comes amid broader Republican efforts to rein in lower courts that have repeatedly halted administration policies on immigration. Ogles’ move signals a willingness to use impeachment as a tool against perceived judicial activism on TPS matters.
