The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is crystal clear again, and President Trump wants the vandal responsible behind bars. On Sunday, Trump shared photos on Truth Social showing the pool’s water restored to its proper reflective glory, the Washington Monument mirrored perfectly on the surface. Alongside those images came something else: a wanted poster calling for the public’s help identifying the suspect who dumped dye into the water just days before America’s 250th birthday celebrations.
This is not petty property damage. The Reflecting Pool is a symbol, a mirror held up to the nation itself. When vandals turned it green with algae-inducing contaminants, they were not just attacking a body of water. They were attacking the American story, the continuity of our history, the very idea that this republic has endured for two and a half centuries. Trump gets this. That is why he made the cleanup a priority, and that is why he is demanding prosecution.
The restoration itself is worth noting. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum credited “advanced nanobubbler technology” for killing the algae that has plagued the pool since 1922. The system worked. The water is blue again, reflective again, dignified again. Compare this to Obama’s 2009 reopening, when the pool was famously choked with algae and debris. Some administrations accept decay. This one fights it.
Seven individuals have already been arrested in connection with the vandalism, including former U.S. Olympian David Hearn, who was indicted for his alleged role in the contamination. But the primary suspect remains at large, and Trump is treating this with the seriousness it deserves. The U.S. Park Police are actively investigating, and the President’s public call for information ensures this case will not fade from memory.
What kind of person desecrates a national monument days before the country’s semiquincentennial? What drives someone to poison a symbol that belongs to every American, regardless of politics? These are questions for the prosecutors, but the rest of us can draw our own conclusions. The left has spent years normalizing contempt for American institutions, for our history, for the very symbols of our shared identity. Is it any surprise that contempt has curdled into vandalism?
Trump is drawing a line. The Reflecting Pool will be protected. The vandals will be caught. And the message is clear: this country belongs to the people who love it, not to those who would deface it.
